Neem - A gift from heaven

The majestic-looking neem (Azadirachta indica), also known as Neem or Niem, belongs to the mahogany family. It is particularly resistant to drought and can grow up to 40 meters high as well as up to 200 years old.

Originally native to the Indian subcontinent, it has been honored as a health donor for plants, animals and humans for thousands of years. In India and neighboring countries such as Pakistan, the various plant parts are still used today in numerous religious ceremonies.

Many Hindus bathe on Indian New Year's Day in a leaf decoction (decoction of the leaves of the Niembaum) to symbolically clean the body and the soul. In addition, the Neem is considered a lucky charm. In some areas it is customary to tie garlands from the neem leaves, thus decorating the whole place on special occasions such as weddings.

In ancient Sanskrit writings the neem is described as a gift of heaven, since an extraordinary healing power is dormant both in the leaves, in the stem and in the bark, as well as in the seeds and fruits. This is also indicated by the Sanskrit word "Nimbu", which means "the disease more easily".

From South Asia, the Niembaum came to Africa only in the 20th century, where it can now be found in more than 30 countries (eg Ghana), as well as in the south of the USA and Central and South America. Meanwhile, more and more people are also interested in the comprehensive healing power of Neem.
