Description

With the shallow 76 × 38 × 22 cm aquarium , you can make use of any narrow space on a Kallax shelf, as it is perfectly designed to fit on a 2×2 Kallax or in a 4×4 shelf. These shallow aquariums are particularly suitable for bottom-dwelling animals such as shrimp and dwarf cichlids (without other fish), but even small catfish will enjoy themselves here. It is also ideal as an open aquarium with a root protruding from it and planted with plants such as orchids or pothos.

In this tank, you can create a wonderful little underwater world in a compact space and add something lively to your room.

The benefits of the shallow Kallax aquarium at a glance

  • Heater mat: optional variant
  • Perfect fit: fits perfectly on a 2x2 Kallax shelf from Ikea

Decoration ideas for your shallow Kallax aquarium

With a height of 22 cm, you have significantly less room for decoration than with tall aquariums. Low-growing and slow-growing plants are particularly advantageous here. Or if you want to design the aquarium as an open system, you can also use aquaponics and grow houseplants or swamp plants out of the tank. If you plan to do this, you should definitely choose animals that are unlikely to jump out of the tank.

Which animals are suitable for the aquarium depends on the usable water volume, internal dimensions, decoration, water quality, and species-specific requirements. Check these factors before choosing your animals.

This tank size is ideal for various dwarf cichlids and gouramis. Invertebrates such as shrimp and snails will also find a home here.

Placement on the Ikea Kallax shelf

The aquarium is designed for use in the IKEA Kallax shelf. Before placing it, check the dimensions, load-bearing capacity, and surface area of your specific shelf model. Also allow enough space for equipment, cables, and maintenance work.

The total load is calculated based on the fully equipped aquarium. Take into account the tank, water, substrate, stones, and accessories. Neither Terra-Natur nor IKEA accepts liability for the load-bearing capacity of the shelf. Protect the furniture from splashes and escaping water.

Frequently asked questions about the 76 cm Kallax aquarium for the 2x2 Kallax shelf

How much water does the 76 cm Kallax aquarium hold?

The gross water volume of this aquarium, which is only 22 cm high, is 63 liters. Please note that the water volume is reduced by decorations such as substrate, stones, and other items, and therefore the fish will have a smaller volume of water in which to swim.

Which animals can be kept in a 76 cm Kallax aquarium?

Smaller ornamental fish, such as Dario dario or dwarf shrimp, can be kept well in this aquarium. If you want to combine several species for a community tank, be sure to check beforehand whether the requirements of the species are compatible and whether the tank size is sufficient.

What do the abbreviations on the lid mean?
  • VH: Sliding direction front/back.
  • LR: Sliding direction left/right.
  • TE: Equipment corner for cables or hoses.
  • FL: Feeding hole.

Example: VH/2TE/1FL denotes a lid with a front/back sliding direction, two equipment corners, and one feeding hole.

Can I also place the aquarium inside the Kallax shelf instead of on top of it?

The aquarium is sized to fit perfectly on the 2x2 Kallax shelf from Ikea. It is also possible to place the aquarium in a larger shelf. In this case, a partition panel must be removed. We only recommend this if the shelf can be securely screwed to the wall for better stability and, if necessary, the bottom panel is reinforced.

Set-up examples for your new aquarium

You see a tank, but have no idea where to start? We’re here to help with a variety of ideas so you can get straight to setting it up when our aquarium arrives.

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

With the right selection of aquatic plants, you can also make small aquariums appear significantly larger. For small aquariums, we also recommend using finer plants. Rotala or Ludwigia species are suitable as stem plants for the background here. This prevents the tank from looking overcrowded. A larger-leaved eye-catcher is allowed to introduce a different leaf shape.

Nano aquarium with sand and rock formation

Small aquariums can be beautifully landscaped with a small rock formation and suitable small roots. They should be planted predominantly with fine-leaved plants such as compact Anubias, Cryptocorynes, or various mosses. Fine stem plants or needle leeks are also a good option.

Tall aquariums as living green pictures

Tall aquariums offer a major advantage in terms of overall design flexibility. Larger roots and broad-leaved aquatic plants such as Java fern can be used here. A classic Vallisneria spiralis comes into its own in the background, as does a Ludwigia. The foreground can be landscaped with Monte Carlo pearlwort, cryptocorynes, needle moss, dwarf sword plants or Staurogyne repens.

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow aquariums are ideal for recreating a great underwater stream. Fine sand and many round river stones of different sizes can be used to create a natural structure. At the same time, hardy, low-growing aquatic plants such as Cryptocoryne, dwarf sword plants, or Brazilian grass provide optimal planting for such shallow aquariums. When properly set up, these tanks are ideal for catfish and shrimp, which do not necessarily require height.
