Description

The divided Kallax aquarium is perfect for raising, breeding, or keeping dwarf shrimp, snails, and fighting fish. In total, the aquarium offers a volume of 27 liters. The division creates two separately filterable compartments of approximately 13 liters each. Designed for the IKEA Kallax shelving unit, this glass aquarium is very popular among shrimp keepers. It is made of 4 mm thick float glass with ground and polished edges and requires no cross-bracing.

You choose the equipment that suits your project: The tank is available without a lid or with a sliding glass lid. You can also add a suitable Terra-Natur heating mat as an option.

The benefits of the 2x 13-liter Kallax aquarium at a glance

  • Compact format: 33 × 38 × 22 cm for a space-saving aquarium setup.
  • 4 mm float glass: with ground and polished glass edges.
  • Bonding: Black bonding
  • No cross-bracing: free access for setup and maintenance.
  • Flexible equipment: different sliding lids and mats available as options.
  • Custom modifications: cutouts, holes, and other versions available on request.

Design ideas for your 2x 13-liter aquarium

Designing this divided aquarium is considerably more difficult. Such tanks are often used primarily for breeding and raising, so an underwater landscape plays a lesser role here. Nevertheless, you can decorate these small compartments with small, fine root systems and stones, as well as small aquatic plants or epiphytes such as Anubias nana Bonsai or Bucephalandras.

We do not recommend keeping ornamental fish permanently in these tanks, including fighting fish. However, they are well suited for raising and preparing for breeding. Dwarf shrimp can be kept and sorted excellently in the tanks.

Placement in the Kallax shelving unit

The aquarium is designed for use in the well-known IKEA Kallax shelving unit. Before placement, check the exact dimensions, load capacity, and support area of your specific shelving unit model. Also plan enough space for equipment, cables, and maintenance work.

For the load calculation, the entire set-up counts: In addition to the tank and water, the substrate, stones, and other accessories must also be taken into account. Please note that neither we nor IKEA accept any liability for the load capacity of the shelving unit. It should be avoided at all costs to let water come into contact with the shelving unit.

Frequently asked questions about the Kallax aquarium

How much water fits in the aquarium?

The aquarium with the dimensions 33 × 38 × 22 cm is stated to have a volume of approx. 27 liters. The tank is divided in the middle with a pane, creating two separate compartments of approx. 13 liters each. The actual water volume is lower due to the glass thickness, fill height, substrate, and decoration.

Is a glass lid included?

This depends on the version you choose. With "WITHOUT", the aquarium is delivered without a lid. The other versions include the respective sliding glass lid.

What do the abbreviations VH, TE, and FL mean?
  • VH: Sliding direction front/back.
  • TE: Equipment corner for cables or hoses.
  • FL: Feeding hole.

Example: VH/2TE/1FL denotes a lid with a front/back sliding direction, two equipment corners, and one feeding hole.

Is a heating mat included?

The heating mat is optional. Choose "Mat: Yes" if you want it added to your order.

Set-up examples for your new aquarium

You see a tank, but have no idea where to start? We’re here to help with a variety of ideas so you can get straight to setting it up when our aquarium arrives.

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

With the right selection of aquatic plants, you can also make small aquariums appear significantly larger. For small aquariums, we also recommend using finer plants. Rotala or Ludwigia species are suitable as stem plants for the background here. This prevents the tank from looking overcrowded. A larger-leaved eye-catcher is allowed to introduce a different leaf shape.

Nano aquarium with sand and rock formation

Nano aquarium with sand and rock formation

Small aquariums can be beautifully landscaped with a small rock formation and suitable small roots. They should be planted predominantly with fine-leaved plants such as compact Anubias, Cryptocorynes, or various mosses. Fine stem plants or needle leeks are also a good option.

Tall aquariums as living green pictures

Tall aquariums offer a major advantage in terms of overall design flexibility. Larger roots and broad-leaved aquatic plants such as Java fern can be used here. A classic Vallisneria spiralis comes into its own in the background, as does a Ludwigia. The foreground can be landscaped with Monte Carlo pearlwort, cryptocorynes, needle moss, dwarf sword plants or Staurogyne repens.

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow aquariums are ideal for recreating a great underwater stream. Fine sand and many round river stones of different sizes can be used to create a natural structure. At the same time, hardy, low-growing aquatic plants such as Cryptocoryne, dwarf sword plants, or Brazilian grass provide optimal planting for such shallow aquariums. When properly set up, these tanks are ideal for catfish and shrimp, which do not necessarily require height.
