Description

With the 56-liter Kallax aquarium measuring 68 × 38 × 22 cm, you can create fantastic underwater landscapes with rocks and driftwood. The tank is perfect for setting up a stream with small, rounded river stones and shrimp.

The dimensions of the aquarium are designed to match the interior dimensions of Kallax shelving units. So if you remove a divider, this shallow aquarium fits perfectly across two sections of your Kallax.

Kallax aquarium benefits at a glance

  • Dimensions: 68 × 38 × 22 cm.
  • Finish: Transparent bonding
  • Lid: depending on the selected version.
  • Heated base: optionally available, if offered in the selection menu.
  • Suitable for placement in a Kallax unit if a compartment divider is removed
  • Custom modifications: Cut-outs, holes, and other custom options available upon request.

Aquarium setup ideas

With a height of 22 cm and a lid, you have significantly less room for design than in tall aquariums. Very flat and slow-growing plants such as mosses or dwarf cryptocorynes are particularly well suited. Or if you want to keep the aquarium open, you can also set up an aquaponics system and grow houseplants or bog plants out of the tank. If you plan to do this, you should definitely choose fish that are unlikely to jump out of the tank.

Which animals are suitable for the aquarium depends on the usable water volume, interior dimensions, setup, water quality, and species-specific requirements. Check these factors before choosing your livestock.

This tank size is ideal for various dwarf cichlids and small danios. Invertebrates such as shrimp and snails will also find a home here.

Placement in a Kallax shelving unit

The aquarium is designed for use in an IKEA Kallax shelving unit. Before placing it, check the dimensions, load capacity, and surface area of your specific shelving unit model. Also allow enough space for equipment, cables, and maintenance.

The total load of the fully equipped aquarium must be taken into account. Consider the tank, water, substrate, rocks, and accessories. Neither Terra-Natur nor IKEA accepts liability for the load capacity of the shelving unit. Protect the furniture from splashes and escaping water.

Frequently asked questions about the Kallax aquarium

How much water does the aquarium hold?

The Kallax aquarium with a side length of 68 cm has a gross volume of 56 liters. Please note that the setup, such as substrate and rocks, will displace additional water and reduce the actual swimming space.

Is a glass lid included?

You can order the aquarium without a glass lid, or add one of our various sliding glass lids with different options.

What do the abbreviations on the lid mean?
  • VH: Sliding direction front/back.
  • LR: Sliding direction left/right.
  • TE: Equipment corner for cables or hoses.
  • FL: Feeding hole.

Example: VH/2TE/1FL denotes a lid with a front/back sliding direction, two equipment corners, and one feeding hole.

How is the aquarium delivered?

The aquarium is well packaged and delivered directly from the aquarium builder. Delivery is normally via parcel service.

Set-up examples for your new aquarium

You see a tank, but have no idea where to start? We’re here to help with a variety of ideas so you can get straight to setting it up when our aquarium arrives.

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

Small aquariums with a colorful variety of plants

With the right selection of aquatic plants, you can also make small aquariums appear significantly larger. For small aquariums, we also recommend using finer plants. Rotala or Ludwigia species are suitable as stem plants for the background here. This prevents the tank from looking overcrowded. A larger-leaved eye-catcher is allowed to introduce a different leaf shape.

Nano aquarium with sand and rock formation

Small aquariums can be beautifully landscaped with a small rock formation and suitable small roots. They should be planted predominantly with fine-leaved plants such as compact Anubias, Cryptocorynes, or various mosses. Fine stem plants or needle leeks are also a good option.

Tall aquariums as living green pictures

Tall aquariums offer a major advantage in terms of overall design flexibility. Larger roots and broad-leaved aquatic plants such as Java fern can be used here. A classic Vallisneria spiralis comes into its own in the background, as does a Ludwigia. The foreground can be landscaped with Monte Carlo pearlwort, cryptocorynes, needle moss, dwarf sword plants or Staurogyne repens.

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow tanks for stream aquariums and catfish

Shallow aquariums are ideal for recreating a great underwater stream. Fine sand and many round river stones of different sizes can be used to create a natural structure. At the same time, hardy, low-growing aquatic plants such as Cryptocoryne, dwarf sword plants, or Brazilian grass provide optimal planting for such shallow aquariums. When properly set up, these tanks are ideal for catfish and shrimp, which do not necessarily require height.
